With AAA predicting automobile travel to increase by 1.4 percent this Labor Day weekend as 29.7 million travelers hit the road, the Minnesota Department of Transportation urges travelers to plan ahead and use extra caution traveling through highway work zones.

By using MnDOT’s popular 511 traveler information maps, motorists can plan ahead and think about alternate routes by using information in advance to plan for road construction and detours.

Highway projects in southeastern Minnesota that might affect travel Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 include the following:

• Interstate 35 through Owatonna, which is undergoing construction. Motorists have single lane head-to-head traffic and can experience slowdowns and delays through the corridor.

• Interstate 90 in Winona County, where an 8-mile pavement project directs vehicles into single lane traffic each way from between Highway 76 and exit 267 at Nodine.

• I-90 eastbound from Stewartville exit to Eyota exit, where traffic is narrowed to a single lane for 12 miles for concrete work.

• I-90 at the Dresbach Bridge where motorists will have single lane head-to-head traffic at the Wisconsin border near La Crosse, Wis.

• Highway 52 in Cannon Falls and south of Cannon Falls. Lane restrictions exist through Cannon Falls as part of a new interchange construction, and south of Cannon Falls near Goodhue County Road 9, where an interchange is being constructed.
