• The roster of the Albert Lea women’s softball playoff champions consisted of Marcia Stoneking, Pat Blunt, Ella Hanson, Athelene Tesch, Lily Neitzel, Mert Gray, Joan Sorenson, Ethel Vokoun, Mary Jo Johnson, Mary Anderson, Sherry McClusky, Leone Hueners, Rosie Kirsch and Sharon Sigurdson.

• Named to the City League All-Star softball team from Trades and Labor were Al Berg, second base; Wayne Feuerheim, third base; Al Brooks, shortstop, “Cannonball” Nelson, outfield; Jack Woodside, catcher; and Adrian Yokiel, pitcher. From Thorson’s Sporting Goods selections were Archie Nelson, outfield; and Ron Mathews, pitcher. From Smith Douglas was Gary Hanson, first base. From Wilson’s was Lefty Sullivan, outfield.

25 years ago: 1989

• Coach Tom Drydal of the Albert Lea girls’ tennis team started practice with five returning letter winners: Kelli Laumann, Kari Haanstad, Vicki Oliver, Angie Casterton and Shannon Laumann.

• The Albert Lea girls’ cross country team finished second in a triangular meet. Stillwater won with 36 points, the Tigers had 46 points and Sibley finished with 122 points. Finishes for Albert Lea were Amy Stay, fourth; Robin Hays, sixth; Missy Cafourek, 11th; Jenna Seul, 12th; Betty Olivera, 13th; Lisa Zieman, 15th; and Rhonda Galkin, 20th.

• Bruce Westrum of Albert Lea won the A Division singles title in the Albert Lea Men’s Open tennis tournament. Westrum teamed with Swede Sorenson to win the A Division doubles title.

10 years ago: 2004

• In its opening tennis match of the year, United South Central defeated Austin 4-3. Winners for USC in singles were Rebecca Leland at No. 1, Sara Neubauer at No. 3 and Cassie Wood at No. 4. Ashley Wermedal and Kim Staloch won at No. 3 doubles for USC.

• The Albert Lea 16-and-under girls’ fastpitch team defeated Wanamingo 29-9 in its last game of the season. Team members were Chelsea Barrett, Evin Sather, Alyssa Paulson, Dez Jacobs, Tatum Roberts, Claire Paczkowski, Jen Neumann, Shelby Vietze, Kelly Royce, Kat Ladwig, Marissa Cottrell, Jaclyn Rehmke, April Balsey and Stacie Thisius. Albert Lea’s head coach was Dan Paczkowski.
