ST. PAUL — Sen. Al Franken is urging Attorney General Eric Holder to focus Department of Justice efforts on recruitment by terror organizations in the United States, particularly in Minnesota.
In a letter to Holder, the Democratic senator from Minnesota expresses concern that President Barack Obama’s administration has not yet developed a “comprehensive strategy to address the growing threat of ISIL’s activities in Syria.”
Franken’s letter was written following the news Tuesday that a second American journalist, Steven Sotloff, was executed by Islamic State militants in Syria. In his letter, Franken noted former Minnesotan Douglas Arthur McCain who was killed in Syria while fighting with ISIL. Sotloff’s death comes two weeks after journalist James Foley was also killed.
Obama said today that the U.S. will build a coalition to “degrade and destroy” ISIL.
