Lake Mills won the six-team Central Springs Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, and Northwood-Kensett took third.
In the Week 2 rankings by the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union, both teams made the polls. Lake Mills was No. 14 in Class 2A, and Northwood-Kensett was No. 12 in Class 1A.
The Bulldogs (14-1 overall) blasted past Newman Catholic, Clarksville, Central Springs and Rockford. The closest game was decided by nine points.
Against Northwood-Kensett (4-8 overall), Lake Mills had its closest match. The Bulldogs won 21-16 and 21-14.
“We had to battle,” said Lake Mills coach Jim Boehmer. “It took us a while to seperate against them. They were giving us trouble with off-speed stuff. We will get better against that.”
For the tournament as a whole, the Bulldogs were led by Madison Shifflett, Hailey Borgmeyer and Cede Byrnes at the net. Shifflett posted a team-high 21 kills; Borgmeyer had 20; and Byrnes had 19.
“We hit fairly well — .291 team efficiency is good,” Boehmer said. “I still think we had too many unforced errors. We have to clean that up.”
Kelsea Heintzman had a team-high 70 assists, and Emily Orban led Lake Mills’ defense with 18 digs. Sydney Larson had a team-high eight blocks.
“We are coming on,” Boehmer said. “It has been a good week for us, but we have to focus on the matches ahead.”
Next, Lake Mills will play a triangular at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bishop Garrigan. Northwood-Kensett will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Ansgar.
