Weekend Planner: Bike ride calls for quality family time

The Kiwanis Family Mystery Bike Ride will be this Sunday, leading riders on a mysterious, unknown route.
Registration is from noon to 12:45 p.m. Sunday, and the ride begins at 1 p.m. There is no entry fee. The ride starts and finishes at Edgewater Park.
The ride is not a fundraiser, said Noon Kiwanis Club President Tim Engstrom, also editor of the Tribune. The club hopes to encourage families to ride bicycles as a healthy exercise.
A king and queen of the ride will be proclaimed. Riders will not know the route being taken for the ride and will be lead and tailed by escorts. The ride will be approximately six miles long.
“We have the Freeborn County Bike-a-Thon as a great bicycling event for grown-ups,” Engstrom said. “But we felt the community needed something small for families and not for any cause except the joy of spending time together.”
Erbert & Gerbert’s Sandwich Shop will be at Edgewater to sell sandwiches for riders and to take orders for anyone who wishes to eat after the ride.
Helmets are recommended for all riders. There will be two stops during the ride for free refreshments, snacks and activities.
There will be prizes such as shirts, helmets and other goodies for children. A new children’s bicycle will also be given away during the event.
The Kiwanis Family Mystery Bike Ride is supported by the Statewide Health Improvement Program in Freeborn County.
