The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team will look to move past a 5-0 defeat Thursday at Owatonna.
The Tigers had a six-game winning streak from Sept. 4 to Sept. 16, and a win for the Huskies extended Owatonna’s winning streak to six games after starting the season 2-3-2.
Albert Lea trailed by a goal at halftime, but Owatonna managed four goals in the second half. Tigers coach Rick Barnhill said his team had opportunities to score in the first half.
“Strangely enough, even though we were down 1-0 at half and they had twice as much possession time as us, we could honestly could have been up 2-1,” Barnhill said. “We just missed a couple of breakaway chances.”
Albert Lea (8-3-1 overall, 6-3 Big Nine Conference) is in Class A, while Owatonna (8-3-2 overall, 6-2-1 Big Nine Conference) is in Class AA.
“There was a speed of thought and speed of action that we simply couldn’t match over 80 minutes tonight, but we extracted what we could from the experience and will move forward,” Barnhill said.
Kathryn Flaherty led the Tigers in the goal with six saves, and Megan Kortan added three.
Albert Lea is fourth in the conference standings, while Owatonna is third. Rochester Mayo and Rochester Century are in first place with 9-0 conference records.
Next, the Tigers will host Austin (2-6-4 overall, 2-5-2 Big Nine Conference) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Packers are coming off a 1-0 home win Thursday against Mankato East.
