50 years ago: 1964
• The Albert Lea boys’ cross country team won a five-team meet with a score of 47. Other scores were Robbinsdale Cooper 52, Anoka 54, North St. Paul 80 and Minneapolis West 91. Finishers for the Tigers were Mike Banashak, second; Mike Weum, fifth; Tom Parry ninth; Pete Louters, 11th; Gerald Roth, 20th; Mark Kiel, 25th; and Steve Peik.
• Jim Bratvold scored the only touchdown in the Albert Lea football team’s 6-0 win. The Tigers’ first win of the season raised their record to 1-2.
• The Alden football team defeated Elmore for its 21st straight win. George Purdy ran for a 40-yard touchdown for the Blackhawks.
• Larry Sundsvold scored three touchdowns to lead Kiester to a Border League victory over Freeborn.
25 years ago: 1989
• The Albert Lea girls’ tennis team defeated Austin 6-1. Winning for the Tigers in singles were Kelly Laumann at No. 1, Kari Haanstad at No. 2, Lisa Frame at No. 3 and Missy Podloger at No. 4. The No. 2 doubles team of Vicki Oliver and Sarah Volkenant and the No. 3 team of Mary Sparks and Kristin Adams were also victorious.
• The Albert Lea girls’ swimming team defeated Austin 96.5-72.5. Leah Mattson won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly, and Jill Thompson won the diving competition for Albert Lea.
• The Albert Lea football team improved to 4-0 after shutting out Winona 14-0. Chad Bohonek gained 126 yards on 26 carries, and Eric Nyquist had 12 tackles for the Tigers.
10 years ago: 2004
• The Lake Mills volleyball team defeated Forest City 3-1 by scores of 25-11, 25-12, 19-25 and 25-16. Molly Nelson was 20-of-20 serving with 4 aces. Sarah Abele was 17-of-18 serving with four aces, and Melissa Brackey was 16-of-18 serving with 3 aces. The Bulldogs raised their season record to 16-0 and their North Iowa Conference mark to 6-0.
• Albert Lea graduate Nate Skaar was named head wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.
• In double overtime, Laura Hillman scored the winning goal for the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team in its 1-0 win against Mankato West.
