Lecture to look at radio during World War II

The Freeborn County Historical Museum kicks off its fall lecture series; “Historically Speaking …” with the lecture “The Golden Age of Radio during World War II.”

Gary Schindler will speak on the changes in radio programming in the United States as it entered the war. Programs from 1938, 1941 and 1945 will be showcased to illustrate the changes from light music and comedy variety shows in the 1930s to situation comedies and dramas during the war years.

Attendees will hear from the likes of George Burns and Gracie Allen, Jack Benny and Superman. A fireside chat from President Franklin Roosevelt will demonstrate how the president used the media of radio to connect and inform the nation.

Audience members will also have a chance to reminisce about the role that radio played in their homes during the war. The lecture will conclude with a wartime episode of the No. 1 radio program in 1945: “Fibber McGee & Molly.”

The lecture will be conducted arom 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the museum. Admission is free to historical society members and $5 for non-members. Coffee and pastries will be served.
