Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary
The Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary No. 552 started the new year with their meeting Sept. 20 at the Freeborn Legion Hall. President Sandy Anderson called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance and the Auxiliary Pledge were recited. There was no secretary report. The treasurer report was given and approved. Bills were presented and paid. The poppy report from May was given under old business. The poppy order was decided on for the coming year and they will be ordered by the treasurer.
There was a lot of new business. The date for the community coffee time was set. This will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Nov. 15. The monthly meeting will follow at 10 a.m.
Santa, Hospice tree lighting, the Christmas potluck and bingo party will be Dec. 7. Santa will be arriving at 3 p.m., and this is sponsored by the Freeborn American Legion. The auxiliary will serve coffee and cookies while Santa is there. At 4:30 p.m. the Hospice tree lighting ceremony will take place with the reading of the names to be remembered. The auxiliary potluck will follow at approximately 5 p.m. and bingo will begin at approximately 6 p.m. The entire community is invited to these events and no one leaves bingo empty handed!
The date for the auxiliary annual soup and pie/dessert will be Jan. 17. The serving will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Legion Hall.
Memberships were discussed. There are still a few members who have not yet renewed. Anderson will notify them in the next newsletter.
A discussion was held to see if coupons should still be sent to the military bases overseas. After a long discussion, it was decided to discontinue this project. The money that was spent on the mailing of coupons will be used to support projects within the state and district.
Some funds from the Poppy and general funds were dispersed by donating to the department and district presidents’ projects, to the $5 bill shower, to the ALA Hospital and to the Christmas gift shop. Funds were also donated to the mission project. It will be decided at another meeting whether more will be donated.
With no other business, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be Oct. 18.
