The regular season’s not over yet, but the Lake Mills football team already sealed a spot in the state playoffs for the sixth time in school history.
“It’s good for our kids and coaches,” said Bulldogs coach Bill Byrnes.
A 38-12 win Friday at West Fork gave the Lake Mills (3-5 overall, 3-2 Class 1A District 3) a two-game lead over the bottom three teams in the district standings with only one game left on the schedule.
West Fork scored the first points of the game on a 37-yard touchdown run by Devin Heitland. However, the Bulldogs responded with 38 unanswered points.
Josh Peters found the end zone on runs of eight, 29, 24 and 15 yards, and he compiled 221 yards of total offense. Andrew Olsen added 123 yards and a four-yard touchdown run on 14 carries.
Lake Mills was led by Granger Kingland from the pocket. He completed four-of-seven passes for 38 yards.
Matt Throne posted a team-high 11 tackles, and Max Bergo added 10.
“Our seniors played very well,” Byrnes said. “Josh (Peters), Andrew (Olsen), Brian (Quinby), Cody (Haugo), Matt (Scholbrock), Matt (Throne) and Landon (Abele) all did a great job.”
In addition to the six state berths, the Bulldogs also played in a state play-in game in 2009, Byrnes said.
Lake Mills will host Emmetsburg (5-3 overall, 4-1 Class 1A District 3) at 7 p.m. next Friday.
