50 years ago: 1964
• Winners in the local Punt, Pass and Kick competition were the following: James Ellinghusen, age 8; Gregory McDonald, 9; Robert Behrends, 10; Henry Komosewski, 11; Robert White, 12; and Steve Van Winkle, 13.
• The Albert Lea football team was defeated by Minneapolis Central 32-20. Leading rushers for the Tigers were Dave Mueller with 54 yards and Doyle Freemeyer with 50.
• In a football battle for first place in the Border League, Alden defeated Kiester 47-13. Alden remained undefeated in league play with a 6-0 record, while Kiester dropped to 5-1. Alden won its 25th straight game and its 31st straight in the Border League. Bob Hoeg scored four touchdowns for Alden.
25 years ago: 1989
• The Albert Lea football team defeated Rochester John Marshall 28-12. Chad Bohonek and tight end Jon Cluppert each scored two touchdowns for the Tigers, and Eric Nyquist led the defense with 15 tackles.
• Sophomore Kelly Laumann of the Albert Lea girls’ tennis team took third place in the regional tournament. She ended the season with a 25-3 record.
• Junior Heather Amundson of Northwood-Kensett won the district title in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and advanced to her third straight state cross country meet. She was a two-time state champion in the 800-meter dash, and she won the 1500-meter run title the previous spring.
• Quarterback Max Jeffrey threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to tight Jon Cluppert, and Dave Arborgast kicked a 20-yard field goal in the Albert Lea football team’s 9-7 win over Faribault.
10 years ago: 2004
• The Albert Lea boys’ soccer team shut out Mankato Loyola 4-0 in the first round of the Section 2A tournament with Ethan Berg in goal. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Nate Lombardi, Peter Drachmann, Zach McGinnis and A. J. Kortz.
• In Section 2A girls’ soccer, Albert Lea lost to Mankato West 4-3 in a shootout. Leah Walters, Conner Peterson and Kendra Olchefski scored for the Tigers.
