A 30-point first-quarter deficit was too much to climb back from for the Lake Mills football team.

The Bulldogs (3-7 overall) fell 46-12 Wednesday at South Winneshiek (10-0 overall) in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs.

Lake Mills found its most success through the air. Granger Kingland completed 13-of-19 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Grant Boehmer snagged the first scoring grab in the second quarter, and Tanner Escherich caught another in the fourth.

“Offensively we were able to move the ball with 10 first downs (compared to 12 for South Winneshiek),” said Lake Mills coach Bill Byrnes. “But it was tough to sustain all game.”

The Bulldogs finished the season with three wins. Those victories were 32-8 against Central Springs, 55-0 against Eagle Grove and 38-12 at West Fork.

On the season, Kingland led the team with 58 completions for 744 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions. Josh Peters had a team-high 191 carries for 913 yards.

Defensively, Andrew Olsen and Brady Schmidt led Lake Mills with 63.5 and 60.5 tackles, and Peters led the secondary with three interceptions.

“We have a good nucleus of players coming back and will fill in with JV players as well,” Byrnes said. “We would like to thank everyone for all the support this past season.”
