Northwood Fire & Rescue Co. receives $10,000 makeover

Community members are invited to attend the unveiling of the Northwood Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company on Thursday during a ceremony at the fire station.
The station is undergoing a $10,000 makeover after volunteer firefighter Ryan Severson won a contest through insurance company California Casualty.
The unveiling will be at 4:30 p.m. at the fire station, 96 Eight St. N., Northwood.
The Fire Department is 127 years old and is the only volunteer fire department in Iowa that operates solely from donations, according to a news release.
The makeover will replace tables and chairs that have missing arms and exposed screws, buy new couches and recliners and provide a big screen television to help train new recruits, the release stated.
“This will really make a difference,” said Severson, the treasurer for the department, in a news release last month. “We can now fix things around the firehouse that have been neglected because other things like purchasing medical/rescue equipment and firefighting tools took priority. This really takes the worry off my shoulders.”
The release stated three generations of Severson’s family have volunteered with the department, including his father, brother and son.
“Firefighters are on the line every day courageously protecting our homes and businesses,” said Mike McCormick, vice president of California Casualty. “Giving them a nicer environment to work is the least we could do to say thanks.”
California Casualty is headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., and provides auto and home insurance to firefighters, law enforcement, educators and nurses across the country.
