Class AAAAAA will have 32 largest high schools by enrollment

A seventh football class has been added to Minnesota high school football.

The Minnesota State High School League announced April 7 that Class AAAAAA will comprise of the 32 largest schools in the state beginning in 2012. Under the new plan, the next two largest classes will have 48 schools each. How to divide the three smallest 11-man classes is not yet determined.

According to the MSHSL Board of Directors meeting synopsis, the state’s current largest football class — Class AAAAA — has an enrollment ratio of largest school to smallest school of 2.5 to 1. The newest class will have a ratio of 1.8 to 1.

The new class will range from the state’s largest school, Wayzata High School with 3,060 students to its 32nd largest, Apple Valley High School with 1,638 students.
