The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team scored more goals Tuesday at Luverne than it had in over a month, but the Cardinals edged the Tigers 4-3 in overtime.
“We played one of our best games of the year,” said Albert Lea coach Jason Fornwald. “We just kept battling back, and we alternated goals until they scored in overtime.”
Hannah Savelkoul led the Tigers with two goals, and Anna Englin added one.
“We had nice contributions from Hannah and Anna,” Fornwald said.
Luverne (6-1 overall) took a 3-2 lead late in the second period, but Albert Lea (1-9 overall) responded with Savelkoul’s second goal to send the game into overtime.
Katie Schwarz led Albert Lea in the goal with 49 saves and a save percentage of .925. Along with Schwarz, Fornwald said Lyrik Blake showed heart and determination in the defensive zone.
Next, Albert Lea will host Fairmont at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
