Freeborn County Fair dominates weekend events

The Freeborn County Fair — known as “the six best days of summer” — continues through the weekend.

Friday, it’s Little Big Town in the grandstand at 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the rodeo starts at 1 p.m. A qualifying barrel race starts at 9 a.m. Travis Tritt will be in the grandstand at 8:30 p.m. There is an all-day tribute to The Beatles in Entertainment Square.

On Sunday, there is a community church service at 10 a.m. in the grandstand. There’s a talent contest at Entertainment Square from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The demolition derby starts at 4 p.m.

Numerous events are scheduled in Entertainment Square, Rodeo Corral Square and the Youth Stage each day. A hypnotist performs each day at 6 and 8 p.m. in the Fairlane Community Building. Then there are 4-H exhibits, livestock, commercial exhibits, a carnival, floral exhibits and arts and crafts. There is truly something for everyone at the Freeborn County Fair.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, Aug. 7

The Bonnie Wedge, Heidi Thompson and Sara Aeikens exhibits will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise from 6 to 7:30 pm. Reservations are needed by 4 p.m.; call 383-2630.

Saturday, Aug. 8

The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.

 The Bonnie Wedge, Heidi Thompson and Sara Aeikens exhibits will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise from 4 to 5:30 p.m. No reservations are needed.

The Pelican Breeze will hold a Harley Biker Cruise at 7 p.m. Reservations are needed for this event by 4 p.m. Call 383-2630.

Sunday, Aug. 9

The City Golf Open gets under way at 7:30 a.m. at Green Lea Golf Course.

 The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Guitarist David Courey will entertain. No reservations are needed.

Big Ben & the Brians will perform at the Edgewater Park Bandshell at 1:30 p.m.
