Teachers’ union steps away from issue of starting classes in August

The Albert Lea Education Association has removed itself from the proposed calendar issue but did not explicitly revoke or reverse its endorsement.
The calendar had the support of the union, but board member Julie Johnson, in an email, said the union’s support of the calendar has caused internal stress and will leave the issue to the school board and administration.
The proposed calendar, first discussed almost two years ago, calls for students starting before Labor Day on Aug. 17, 2015. Students could potentially get out of school on May 20, 2015, unless there are snow days. The calendar also features a two-week break in October and March, where enrichment and remediation can be offered.
