Hjalmer Johnson, 1915-2015

Hjalmer B. Johnson, 99, of North Branch died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at Ecumen North Branch. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Elof; 10 siblings; wife, Doris (Swenson); and sons Donald and Gerhald.

He is survived by his sister, Delores Carlson, of Shafer; daughter, Judith Johnson, of North Branch; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Hjalmer was born April 7, 1915, in Shafer to parents Elof and Mary (Christensen) Johnson. Hjalmer worked at Albert Lea Foundry for over 30 years. He and Doris owned a neighborhood grocery store on Front Street and later on one on South Broadway in Albert Lea. They also owned a bar in Myrtle before retiring to North Branch. Hjalmer enjoyed cooking, gardening vegetables and flowers, fishing, Buicks, Dobermans and black cats.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in North Branch. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Grandstrand Funeral Home in North Branch and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Albert Lea.
