ELK RIVER — A 24-year-old Minnesota man tortured and killed his girlfriend’s dog and captured much of the abuse on video, a criminal complaint alleges.

Anthony Sather of Princeton was charged Wednesday in Sherburne County with felony animal torture. Much of the allegations against Sather are based on three videos his girlfriend found on his computer in December showing the assault on the Shiba Inu husky named Draco.

According to the complaint, Sather’s girlfriend told authorities that someone saw the lifeless dog in the ditch. The girlfriend also said she saw a bullet wound and said Sather surmised the dog was probably mistaken for a coyote.

She found videos on Sather’s computer showing the dog being beaten and kicked by him before being taken outside and shot, the charges said.

In one video, Sather punched the dog in the head, lifted it over his head and slammed “it down on the concrete floor multiple times,” the complaint read. Sather then moved close to the camera, smiled and said, “This ain’t done yet,” the complaint said.

A second video shows Sather kicking the dog, according to the complaint, and in the third, he is seen yelling and pointing a silver pistol at Draco. “Gunshots are heard,” the complaint said, suggesting the dog’s death was not recorded visually.

Sheriff’s investigators searched Sather’s bedroom, and he directed them to his nightstand, where the pistol and 300 Valium pills were found, the complaint said. Investigators also recovered nearly 3.5 ounces of marijuana.

Sather also faces two felony drug possession counts. He remained jailed Thursday. A public defender has been granted, but an official with the public defender’s office didn’t immediately return a message. Sather is due back in court Jan. 28.

Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Fildes said that the video “was extremely difficult to watch.”
