Teen faces felony charge for reportedly fleeing

A 17-year-old Harmony boy on Tuesday was charged in Faribault County District Court with a felony charge of fleeing police after he allegedly led a Wells police officer on a high-speed chase for nine miles.

According to court documents, Tallen John McGinley faces one count of fleeing a police officer, one count of speeding faster than the posted speed limit of 55 mph and one count of reckless driving. The speeding charge is a petty misdemeanor and the reckless driving charge is a misdemeanor.

Court documents state the chase reportedly began after a detective from Fillmore County contacted Wells Police Chief Jim Ratelle, advising him that McGinley was at the Casey’s gas station in Wells.

Court records state McGinley was a runaway from Fillmore County.

The detective asked the police chief to check on McGinley’s welfare and also noted that McGinley was reportedly depressed and possibly using marijuana and methamphetamine.

Court documents state Ratelle found McGinley in a silver Mitsubishi driving north on state Highway 22. The police chief activated his lights and the vehicle went into an alley and came to a stop.

As Ratelle was calling in the traffic stop, McGinley reportedly started the car and accelerated south down the alley.

According to court records, Ratelle followed McGinley through Wells onto state Highway 109. There, the pursuit reached speeds of 110 mph, the records say.

About a half mile west of Alden, the Alden police chief responded, McGinley allegedly cut in front of a semi and then pulled over on the west side of the highway’s intersection with Freeborn County Road 6.
