Editorial: Message to music teacher uncalled for

Mail or any other messages sent to the teacher who will become the Albert Lea High School band director, implying she was incapable of doing the job, are completely out of line.

Completely.

While this Editorial Board and most of the community including the Albert Lea school board are disappointed about losing director Peter Gepson to reductions as a result of the realignment of the schools, everyone should agree that the change in high school band directors yet again is in no way new director Suzanne Mauer’s fault.

Mauer, presently the music teacher at Lakeview Elementary School, is more than capable of handling the new role.

She is a graduate of Albert Lea High School — a valedictorian, no less.

She graduated summa cum laude from Luther College with a bachelor’s degree in music and a minor in music education. She has been teaching in Albert Lea Area Schools since 2003.

Whoever sent that mail to Mauer should feel ashamed.

One more point on 4-year terms

The Tribune had an editorial on Tuesday saying, “Mayor Vern Rasmussen and the Albert Lea Charter Commission are considering changing the term length to four years.”

True, Rasmussen has come out in favor of it, but we want to note that in no way is Rasmussen campaigning or spearheading the effort. In fact, one of the main proponents is former Mayor Randy Erdman.

We urge residents to attend the meeting of the Charter Commission at 5:15 p.m. May 2 to voice their feeling on mayoral term lengths.
