Two wrestlers from Lake Mills and one from Northwood-Kensett emerged as state qualifiers Saturday at the Class 1A District 6 meet in Jewell, Iowa.
Brady Schmidt and Andrew Olsen qualified for the Bulldogs, and Coleby Bratrud qualified for the Vikings. All three wrestlers are seniors.
Schmidt won the 152-pound weight class by defeating Skyler Michalski of Manson Northwest Webster in the semifinals 4-0 and then Luke Peters of South Hamilton 4-1 in the finals.
“Brady did a nice job controlling both matches today,” said Lake Mills coach Alex Brandenburg. “I was really happy with the way he wrestled today and am glad he is getting another trip to state.”
Olsen moved on to state with a runner-up finish at 195 pounds. He pinned Danny Eslick of Ogden in the semifinals in the first period, and fell to third-ranked Rylan Richardson of South Central Calhoun 1-0 in the finals.
“Andrew got a big pin in the semis against a very physical wrestler,” Brandenburg said. “I was pretty nervous about the matchup because Eslick had beaten a ranked wrestler 9-2 last week in his sectional.”
Both seniors will compete in the state tournament next week in Des Moines.
Schmidt and Olsen both qualified for state last year as juniors and lost out one round before placing.
“Brady and Andrew have been to state before and know what to expect of the environment,” said Brandenburg. “They are looking to take the next step and place.”
The season came to a close for standout sophomore Slade Sifuentes. Sifuentes was upset in the semifinals as Nick Ross from Ogden caught him on his back for the pin. He battled back to win his next match 11-9 against Ryan Anderson of Clarion-Goldfield but did not get a wrestleback.
“Slade slipped off of a pinning combination and got trapped on his back,” Brandenburg said. “Although he is disappointed about not making it through, it doesn’t take away from a tremendous season in which he improved a ton.”
