A 17-year-old girl from Thompson, Iowa, was killed in a vehicle rollover Saturday night southwest of Kiester.
Authorities were alerted to the crash, on 560th Avenue near 20th Street, at 9:23 a.m. Sunday. The person reporting the crash said an individual was lying unresponsive next to a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle. When authorities arrived, they found the teenager, Sydney Larson, deceased.
Faribault County Sheriff Mike Gormley said the crash remains under investigation. He said the roads were dry and clear at the time Larson was found.
No other people were involved in the crash.
The Minnesota State Patrol, Wells Police Department, Kiester Fire Department and Kiester Ambulance crews assisted at the scene.
The rollover is believed to have occurred at about 7 p.m. Saturday. Details about the crash or which direction Larson was traveling have not been released. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office had issued an attempt to locate for Larson, Gormley said.
Students mourned Larson’s death on Monday at North Iowa High School in Buffalo Center, where she was a junior. A crisis team was on hand to assist students.
Larranda Gusan, a former classmate of Larson’s at United South Central, said though she was not close friends with Larson, she described Larson as someone she strived to be like.
“I don’t think I knew anyone who didn’t like her,” Gusan said. “Her smile lit up the room.”
She said Larson had a bright future.
Gormley expected more information to be released this week.
