A 23-year-old Rochester man was charged in Freeborn County District Court on Monday with two counts of assault related to a reported stabbing over the weekend at Harmony Park near Geneva Lake.
Casey Alan Gefre faces one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of third-degree assault related to the incident.
The stabbing reportedly took place at 3:56 a.m. Sunday.
The victim, who has not been identified, was reportedly stabbed in the upper left leg and taken to the Albert Lea Medical Center for treatment.
According to court documents, the victim said he had gone to Harmony Park to celebrate a class reunion with three other friends. He told authorities he was the designated driver and had not been drinking.
The victim and Gefre gave differing stories.
Court records state the victim told authorities that before the incident occurred he saw a man get “sucker-punched” and that he saw a woman kicking the man while he was on the ground.
The documents did not make it clear who the man getting beaten up was.
The statement said the victim got between the woman and Gefre and then walked with Gefre to his tent. While standing near the tent, Gefre allegedly stabbed him in the upper leg near the groin.
The victim said Gefre was facing him when he allegedly stabbed him.
According to court documents, Gefre admitted that he had stabbed someone. However, he told authorities that five or six men had been assaulting him and that they followed him to his tent.
One of the men hit him, and he grabbed a knife and swung it backward, the court document continued. All of the men scattered, and he ran from the tent in panic. He said he wasn’t sure what happened to the knife.
Gefre described the knife as a standard-size steak knife with a black handle.
Court documents state a deputy looked for the steak knife but wasn’t able to find it. The deputy did, however, find a set of six steak knives with one missing.
The security guard at the park told authorities he saw five or six men chasing another man. A short time later, they came to the stage area, and he realized that someone had been stabbed, according to the court documents.
The guard said he found Gefre hiding in a bunch of trees. Gefre told him he was going to get beaten up by several men and that he had stabbed one of them and then ran.
In court on Monday, Gefre’s unconditional bail was set at $20,000 and his conditional bail was set at $5,000.
His second-degree assault charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine. The third-degree assault charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
