Local athlete takes gold at Special Olympics

Kylee Wassenberg, a student at United South Central who attends Children’s Care Hospital and School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, left, stands with her coach, Terri Christianson, on March 14 during the girls’ Division I state basketball skills competition at the South Dakota Special Olympics. Wassenberg won a medal for taking first place in the competition, which consisted of three events: dribbling, passing and shooting. Wassenberg, 14, overcame massive foot reconstruction surgery three years ago and relearned how to walk. — Provided
