Two brothers from Albert Lea are facing methamphetamine charges after a search warrant conducted at a home earlier this month led to an alleged discovery of the drug.

Matthew John Dugstad, 31, faces one count of first-degree meth possession in Freeborn County District Court for allegedly having more than 25 grams of meth, while Alexander Joshua Dugstad, 22, faces one count of fifth-degree meth possession.

Both brothers pleaded not guilty to their charges Thursday in court. Matthew Dugstad is slated for a settlement conference on July 9, with a jury trial Aug. 25 if the case has not been settled. Alexander Dugstad’s next hearing is Aug. 6 with a jury trial Sept. 15.

Court documents state the charges stem from a search warrant police conducted the afternoon of March 11 at 914 St. Peter Ave.

Police reportedly found a dresser in the basement with powder residue, a butane tank with torch, plastic baggies, bongs and other drug paraphernalia, along with about 2 grams of meth, according to court records.

In an upstairs bedroom, police found a smoking device, a scale, a sandwich bag with 76 grams of meth and other lighters and cutting devices. Police also seized $1,300 in cash.

They found smoking devices and syringes in the kitchen.

Court documents stated Matthew Dugstad lived in the house, while Alexander Dugstad was visiting and had spent the night on the couch.

Online court records state Matthew Dugstad posted a non-cash bail on Tuesday. Alexander Dugstad is out after agreeing to a series of conditions.

First-degree meth possession carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

Fifth-degree possession carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
