ST. PAUL — It’s showdown time again over Sunday booze sales.

The Senate is set to vote today on a liquor law bill that slightly chips away at a longstanding ban on Sunday takeaway sales. The bill allows craft breweries to sell 64-ounce growlers of beer on Sundays. But the broader ban on Sunday liquor store operations would remain in force.

Some who want to scrap the prohibition all together could force the issue through an amendment. Minnesota is one of about a dozen states that don’t allow liquor stores to open on Sunday.

The bill also would allow bars to open up earlier on Sundays. Currently, they can’t start serving until 10 a.m. The bill moves it to 8 a.m.
