Officers stop 125 vehicles during enforcement effort

An enforcement campaign focused on curbing distracted driving last week resulted in authorities stopping 125 vehicles for various violations in Freeborn County, according to a news release.

Albert Lea Police Department officers and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office deputies used unmarked vehicles and other high-profile vehicles such as dump trucks to get a better view of the actions of drivers.

The release stated the following were cited:

• seven for the use of a communication device

• four for speed

• four for seat belt violations

• three for driving with a withdrawn license

one for child restraint violations

two for drug violations

• one for felony warrant of drugs

• 10 for other violations

The Albert Lea Police Department utilized its Facebook page to spread the message of the campaign.

Across the state, distracted driving contributes to one in four crashes, 64 deaths and 234 serious injuries each year.

The enforcement was part of the Toward Zero Deaths statewide campaign. It aims for zero traffic fatalities.
