Band gets together to play at farmers market

The Albert Lea Rotary Club will be serving up not only food at this Wednesday’s farmers market, but also some new sounds.

Rotary past president, Jan Mattson, asked her husband, Rory, a guitarist, if he could get some musicians together to perform during the two-hour market. So the retired teacher, using his connections, found three other musicians and formed a band. They call themselves Three Wheels and a Flat.

Mattson had worked with Carrie Boyer Olvera in some Albert Lea Community Theatre musicials. She’s currently writing her own compact disk. She sings vocals in the band.

Mattson worked with Ruth Lawrence of Lakeville, a guitarist and vocalist, doing music for Cursillo. She’s a church musician.

“These two gals sound so good together,” Mattson said.

Albert Lea attorney, Jamie Kyllo, will play bass with the group. He’s actually a member of the Rotary Club, Mattson said.

“We’re really blessed,” Mattson said of the group members.

The group has rehearsed a couple of times and has put together a variety of music, including some songs by Fleetwood Mac and Bonnie Raitt, 1930s music, jazz and even some church songs.

After the Wednesday event, the four plan to do more things together, including Entertainment Square at the Freeborn County Fair.

“We’re weighing a multitude of offers as we speak,” Mattson said.

The band will play from 4 to 6 p.m. at the corner of Fountain Street and Broadway Avenue. Rotary will serve brats and burgers and proceeds will go toward scholarships.
