Back-to-back RBI doubles by Sam Moyer and Alex Bledsoe in the top of the seventh inning boosted the Albert Lea baseball team to five wins in its last six games.
“Those were clutch hits to score big runs with two outs,” said Tigers coach Joe Sczublewski.
Albert Lea (6-6, 3-4 Big Nine) improved to 2-0 and captured the top spot in the Subsection 2AA South standings on Monday with a 7-4 win at St. Peter.
“It’ll be important when it comes time for (playoff) seeding,” Sczublewski said.
Albert Lea is the only Subsection 2AA South team that hasn’t lost a subsection game. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and NRHEG are 3-1, and Waseca is 2-1.
Chris Enderson picked up the pitching win for the Tigers. He struck out five batters and allowed four hits, two earned runs and six walks in seven innings.
“Chris battled out of a few jams and stayed composed on the mound,” Sczublewski said.
The Tigers produced 11 hits. Jake Thompson, Wyatt Paulsen and Bledsoe led the team with two hits each. Moyer, Tanner Bellrichard, Kole Smith, Mason Hammer and Parker Mullenbach had one hit each.
In the first inning, Albert Lea took a 1-0 lead. Thompson singled, stole second and scored on an infield groundout.
St. Peter responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Albert Lea scored the equalizer in the top of the third when Paulsen hit a triple and scored on a single by Mullenbach.
The Tigers recaptured the lead in the top of the fourth. Bledsoe hit a lead-off single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Jake Kilby and scored on a St. Peter error.
Albert Lea’s lead was extended to three runs in the sixth. Bledsoe led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Jake Thompson. Thompson scored on a single by Paulsen.
After St. Peter cut its deficit to one run in the bottom of the sixth, Albert Lea added two runs in the seventh. Smith hit a two-out single, and Moyer and Bledsoe followed with a pair of doubles.
Next, Albert Lea will host Owatonna (5-6, 4-3 Big Nine) at 5 p.m. today. The Huskies beat the Tigers 10-7 on April 16 at Owatonna. However, Owatonna has lost five of its last seven games.
