The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice has reprimanded an Albert Lea family practice doctor for unethical conduct.
The action, against Steve Schulz, took place May 9, according to a press release from the board on Tuesday.
The release stated the nature of Schulz’s misconduct included failure to confirm to the minimum standard of care, failure to maintain adequate records and inappropriate prescribing practices.
His license is suspended, but that suspension will be postponed as long as he complies with several terms.
Schulz may not prescribe narcotics for treatment of chronic pain, but may petition to have that restriction removed after completing several courses on chronic pain management, chemical dependency awareness, medical records management and professional boundaries. The courses must be completed in nine months.
He must also develop a written protocol for tracking controlled substance prescriptions, develop a narcotics agreement, undergo an audit of his documentation and prescribing practices and have a supervising physician submit quarterly reports to the board.
He must pay a civil penalty of $2,229.
The order will remain in effect for a minimum of two years.
Schulz is listed as a family practice doctor at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea and Wells.
The Tribune left a message for Schulz but did not receive a call back before press time.
