50 years ago: 1965
The Austin track and field team defeated Albert Lea 42-33 to win the Region 1 title over the second-place Tigers. Advancing to the state tournament from Albert Lea were Gary Neist, second place in the pole vault; and Mike Banashak, second in the 880-yard run. Tigers setting Albert Lea school records were Tom Boyer in the shot put, Terry Peterson in the high jump and Mike Weum in the mile run.
Albert Lea golfer Mike Oothoudt placed second in the Region 1 golf tournament and advanced to the Minnesota state tournament.
In Church League Fastpitch Softball, Zion Lutheran defeated St. Theodores 16-3 behind the three-hit pitching of John Willmert. John Mealy had three hits for Zion. In the second game of the night, Don Rippentrop threw a four-hitter for Methodist in an 8-4 win over Oakland Methodist.
Rog Olson and Rich Olson each hit two home runs to lead Harold’s to a 23-12 victory over the Moose in an Albert Lea Slowpitch League game.
25 years ago: 1990
The Glenville-Emmons American Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader from Lyle by scores of 7-1 and 9-1. Paul Ahearn was the winning pitcher in Game 1, and Dan Follmuth had three hits. In Game 2, Follmuth and Jason Senne each had two hits.
10 years ago: 2005
In Section 2AA baseball, NRHEG defeated St. Peter 3-2 in 8 innings. B.J. Peterson was the winning pitcher. NRHEG was defeated by United South Central 14-4 in the next round.
The Glenville-Emmons baseball team defeated Lewiston-Altura 4-3 in Section 1A with Alex Hansen as the winning pitcher. In the next game Glenville-Emmons defeated Rushford-Peterson 5-3 with Devin Kaasa pitching the win. Rushford-Peterson defeated Glenville-Emmons 6-3 in the title game and moved on to the Minnesota state tournament.
