For the fourth time in eight district games, the Albert Lea VFW Post 447 baseball team scored 10 or more runs.
However, it was defense that propelled Albert Lea to its sixth district win.
Post 447 turned a 5-2-3 double play to hold Waseca Post 1642 scoreless in the top of the third and win 11-1 Wednesday in five innings at Hayek Field.
“That was a big momentum swing in our favor,” said Albert Lea coach Cory Thomas.
Cody Ball started on the hill for Post 447. After two scoreless innings, Waseca loaded the bases with one out. Alex Ulve fielded a grounder at third base and threw home for the double play’s first out to catcher Zach Edwards, who turned and threw to Dillan Lein at first for the final out.
Ball struck out three batters and allowed six hits and a run in five innings.
“He worked out of a couple of jams and made big pitches in key spots to get them out of a rally,” Thomas said.
After going down in order in the bottom of the first, Albert Lea came alive at the plate. Post 447 scored two runs in the second, two in the third, six in the fourth and the game-ending run in the fifth.
Jake Bordewick led Albert Lea at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and a stolen base.
“Jake stepped up, and it’s no surprise,” Thomas said. “He’s been having a great summer.”
Post 447 racked up 12 hits. Ball, Ulve and Edwards added two hits each.
“We had good production throughout the entire lineup,” Thomas said.
Waseca fell to 5-4 in the district.
Next, Albert Lea (7-6, 6-2 District 1) will host a doubleheader against Stewartville at 11 a.m. Sunday. In the standings released Tuesday, Stewartville was the only team without a district win at 0-6.
