To people who organize small-town festivals.
This weekend in the area there were three small-town festivals: Ellendale Days, Emmons Borderfest and Kiester Days.
We applaud those people who take the time to organize these events and who in turn create a sense of community among residents. Not to mention they are a lot of fun. Take the time to support our area communities this summer.
To people who donated to Buckets on Broadway.
Volunteers with the Freeborn County Humane Society stood on the corners of Broadway and Main Street on Friday to raise money for operating costs for the shelter along with food and utilities. This year, the shelter raised $5,106.
If you didn’t have a chance to donate, mail donations to P.O. Box 423, 101 James Ave., Albert Lea, or drop them off at the shelter from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays or from noon to 5 p.m. Fridays. People can also go to their website and donate through their PayPal account.
To severe weather and storm damage.
In the last few weeks, the area has received severe weather at least once or twice a week. Whether it be heavy rains, high winds or lots of thunder and lightning, we urge residents to take the necessary precautions to protect you and your families.
Be prepared to evacuate and go to high ground. If you see high water do not attempt to drive through it. Do not attempt to cross a flowing stream on foot. Even water only six inches deep, when moving at a high rate of speed, can knock you off your feet.
We hope the rest of the summer will not bring us too much severe weather, but in case we receive more severe weather, make sure to do what you can to stay safe.
To high-speed chases.
An Albert Lea man led police on a high-speed chase a week ago from south of Albert Lea into the city reaching speeds of about 100 mph. Not only does this put our law enforcement in jeopardy but it puts other residents in jeopardy as well. Thanks to the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and the Albert Lea Police Department who assisted in the chase and subsequent search.
