MINNEAPOLIS — Parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis won’t be required to play a video about clergy sex abuse.
Victim advocates wanted the video played in every parish to alert those who have been abused of an Aug. 3 deadline for filing claims against the archdiocese. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Kressel rejected the request Thursday and said the video goes beyond notification of a deadline. Kressel says it amounts to advocacy and that’s outside the purview of the creditors’ committee.
Archdiocese attorney Charlie Rogers argued that church leaders are not legally responsible for encouraging claims. He says the church should determine whether it has any moral obligation to encourage victims to file claims.
