Schmidt shoots 77 in first round of state amateur golf tournament

Albert Lea golfer Phil Schmidt shot 77 on the first day of the 106th Minnesota Golf Association State Amateur tournament Monday at Mendakota Country Club in Mendota Heights.

Schmidt sits in 56th place, tied with 10 different players. The first round leader is Stephen Bidne and Cameron White, who shot a 2-under 70.

The top 60 players move on to the championship round Wednesday and Schmidt would move on if the cut was made now.

Schmidt played the back nine first and was even through the first four holes. He made bogeyed four of the the final five holes to finish 4-over on the side.

Schmidt started the first three holes on the front at 1-under before making bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5. He came back with a birdie on No. 6 to move to even, but bogeyed No. 9 to finish 1-over.

Schmidt plays at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, starting on No. 10.
