Weekend Planner: Duo will perform gospel and bluegrass program
Published 9:57 am Thursday, July 23, 2015
Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, will host a gospel and bluegrass music program on Saturday.
Gary Froiland, a former area musician, will sing in the program, along with Mark Sand, of Forest City, who will join him on several songs playing a saw.
Froiland and Sand worked together at Stoyles Printing Co. in Lake Mills in the ’80s. While working together, they discovered their mutual love of gospel and bluegrass music.
The duo has not performed together for many years but has kept in touch.
Froiland used to be a part of the The Froiland Family Band. The Froiland Family Band made music for 15 years. Gary played the five-string banjo while his wife, Elaine, played the upright bass. Joshua, his son, played the fiddle and daughter, Jessica, played guitar.
The band played for the Miss Minnesota pageant, the Mall of America and at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. The band came to an end in 2008 after a 17-day tour in Japan.
Froiland now travels as a one-man band and continues to entertain. During each program he presents the gospel. To make a full-band sound, Froiland plays along with recordings of himself playing different instruments.
Froiland will perform at 4 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church. A lasagna supper will follow starting at 5:30 p.m.
The duo is performing to help raise money for the Bethany Lutheran Church’s 100th anniversary celebration in September. To purchase a ticket, call Becky Martinson at 641-588-3345.
