50 years ago: 1965
• The Elbow Room improved to 10-1 in the Albert Lea Slowpitch League after defeating Clarks Grove 19-9. George Goskeson hit two home runs, and Del Hovey had three hits including a home run for the Elbow Room. Also, Scotsman defeated the City Employees 19-8 behind five hits for Ron Godtland.
• The Albert Lea Lakettes lost to Fairmont 9-8 in the Fairmont Women’s Fast Pitch Softball Tournament. The Lakettes were led by Candy Jorgenson with three hits.
• The Trinity-Our Savior team defeated Grace Lutheran 11-3 in the first game of a three-team playoff in the National Division of the Albert Lea Church League. Murph Berg was the winning pitcher, and Larry Peterson and Roger Anderson had two hits each.
25 years ago: 1990
• The Albert Lea Colonels baseball team advanced to the Region playoffs after defeating Blue Earth 11-3. Jamie Beck picked up the win.
• The Glenville-Emmons Legion baseball team defeated New Richland 6-2 to win the Subdistrict title. The winning pitcher was Pat Ahearn. Glenville-Emmons had a 16-3 season record.
• The Lou-Rich women’s softball team placed second in the WSA state tournament and advanced to the NSA Super World Series at Belleville, Illinois. Team Members included Jenny Volkenant, Tammy Eggum, Tammy Indrelie, Sue Sanner, Jill Gaetze, Kim Myers, Kathy Stieglebaur, Julie Myers, Ann Knutson, Sue Nielson, Lynette Van Rysywk, Shari Gayken and Mitch Thomas. Head coach of the team was Dick Ackland.
10 years ago: 2005
• The Albert Lea High School wrestling team took first place at the 2005 Luther College team wrestling camp in Decorah, Iowa. Named individual tournament champions from Albert Lea were Ben Berhow, Nate Goodnature, Beau Hansen, Cody Hansen, Adam Kermes, Mathew Morris and Brandon Reyerson. Zach McGinnis and Alex Paul were named Wrestler of the Day. Larry Goodnature and Neal Skaar were the team coaches.
• The Albert Lea U16 boys’ soccer team advanced to the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association state tournament with a 5-1 win against St. Peter. Scoring for Albert Lea were Chris Rahn with three goals, Phil Runden and Richie Needham.
