ST. PAUL — Minnesota House lawmakers will experience a tight squeeze when they reconvene for the 2016 session thanks to a Capitol restoration moving full steam ahead.

The building is currently closed but will partially reopen just for session that starts in March and runs into May.

Department of Administration Commissioner Matt Massman said “the Capitol will have seemed spacious and luxurious” in this year’s session compared to what it will be like in 2016.

Elevators will stop on one floor only and a tight corridor will lead to the House chamber. The gallery will be off-limits. There won’t be public assembly space outside the chamber. The plumbing will remain shut off so there won’t be restrooms.

The Senate intends on holding session in a new office building opening across the street.
