WINONA — The Minnesota State Patrol said it will step up enforcement of the state’s “move over” law, named for a trooper who was struck and killed by a passing vehicle 15 years ago.
The added enforcement will take place today. It’s the 15th anniversary of the death of Trooper Ted Foss, who was killed while making a traffic stop on Interstate 90 near Winona on Aug. 31, 2000.
The law named for Foss requires motorists to move a lane away from a stopped emergency vehicle with its lights on if there are two or more lanes going in the same direction.
According to a press release, no other troopers have been killed since the law’s passage in 2001. The State Patrol has given out 435 citations and made 1,432 warnings so far this year.
