Albert Lea girls’ soccer team won season opener in ’05
50 years ago: 1965
• The Veterans of Foreign Wars won the Albert Lea Softball City League playoff title. Team members were Jim Bellrichard, Paul Tradup, Gary Johnson, Joe Carlin, Wilber Schneider, Bob Webber, Rog Meyer, Elwood Lande, Ditto Nelson, Rudy Janka, Dean Wick, Don Drommerhausen and Bruce Nelson.
• Albert Lea Federal won the Albert Lea Slowpitch playoff title and a trip to the Minnesota State Slowpitch Tournament. Team members included Jim Donovan, Bill Malepsy, Clair Friday, Jim Paulson, Tom Hoffman, Vince Cerrato, Chuck Zenk, Dick Hassler, Dan Kruse, Tom Benson and Sharon Kazemba.
25 years ago: 1990
• The Albert Lea High School girls’ tennis team defeated Fairmont 5-2. Winners for the Tigers in singles matches were Kelly Lauman at No. 1, Lisa Frame at No. 3 and Faye Oliver at No. 4. Winning doubles matches were Vicki Oliver and Sarah Volkenant at No. 1 and Renae Krieg and Jenny Frame at No. 2.
• In their second game at the Minnesota State Adult Amateur Baseball Tournament, the Albert Lea Colonels defeated Sleepy Eye 7-6 with Joe Sczublewski picking up the win.
• The Albert Lea girls’ volleyball team open practice with four returning letter winners. They were Pam Stoltz, Jody Bumpus, Lori Coughlin and Tami Tufte.
10 years ago: 2005
• The No. 3 team in Minnesota tennis, the United South Central girls’ tennis team swept Fairmont 7-0 in its opener. Winning singles matches for USC were Kate Ostrowski at No. 1, Rebecca Leland at No. 2, Cassie Wood at No. 3 and Jill Stenzel at No. 4. In doubles, Marie Halvorson and Kim Staloch at No. 1, Kallie Rollenhagen and Ashley Wermedal at No. 2 and Tiffany Adams and Amanda Redman at No. 3.
• The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 win over Owatonna. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Brittni Lair and Whitney Wilson.
• NRHEG opened its football season with a 14-7 win over Montgomery-Lonsdale. Chris Somage scored a touchdown and gained 136 yards on 19 carries, and Blake Kerkhoff also scored a touchdown and gained 159 yards in 14 carries.
