Play, Crazy Days, Art & Garden Tour ensure busy weekend

The Lighthouse Event Center is presenting the area premiere of John Patrick Shanley’s award-winning drama, “Doubt,” this weekend.
The winner of the Tony Award for Best Play and Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “Doubt” tells the story of a Bronx Catholic school in turmoil during the fall of 1964.
The production is directed by Gordy Handeland. The cast includes Lisa Sturtz, Annmarie Caporale, Al Blumenshein and Andie Lewis. Stage manager is Tony Segura.
“Doubt” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Lighthouse Event Center is located at 638 Marshall St. in Albert Lea.
Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Tone Music in Albert Lea.
Also happening this weekend are Crazy Days all over the city — downtown, Northbridge Mall, Skyline Plaza and downtown.
This is also the weekend for the Albert Lea Art Center’s annual Art & Garden Tour. There are six gardens on the tour. The tour will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $8 per person. They are available at Addie’s Floral & Gifts, Ben’s Floral & Frame Designs, Doyle’s Hallmark and the Albert Lea Art Center. The tickets include addresses and maps to the gardens.

Friday, July 17
The Bonnie Wedge, Heidi Thompson and Sara Aeikens exhibits will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Conger Volunteer Fire Department will old its annual pork chop supper from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Conger Fire Hall. Pork chops, potato salad, cole slaw and beans will be served. A street dance, featuring the “Nowhere East” band, will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cost is $9 for adults for the supper and street dance and $6 for children 12 and younger. The cost for the street dance alone is $5.
The Albert Lea Elks Lodge will hold a fish fry beginning at 5:30 pm. Fish, fries and cole slaw will be served. Cost is $8 per person.
The Pelican Breeze will hold a pizza cruise from 6 to 7:30 pm. Reservations are needed by 4 p.m.; call 383-2630.
Saturday, July 18
The first ShineFest Tractor Ride will begin and end at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. with lineup from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The ride will begin at 9. The route will include nursing homes in Albert Lea onto Alden, Freeborn, Hartland, Clarks Grove and back to the fairgrounds for a pork supper. The public is welcome to come out to the fairgrounds before and after the ride.
The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be open in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise from 4 to 5:30 p.m. No reservations are needed.
A social benefit for Duane (DB) Broitzman, who had a successful kidney transplant on Dec. 23, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Glenville American Legion Club. A pork loin dinner will be served. There will also be a bake sale and live auction. Proceeds will go toward medical expenses.
Sunday, July 19
The Albert Lea Moose Lodge will hold an omelet breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $7 per person.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a pancake breakfast honoring Korean War veterans from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Post. Cost is $6 per person.
The Albert Lea Elks Club will hold a sit-down pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pancakes, eggs, hash browns, sausage, juice and coffee or milk will be served. Cost is $5 per person.
Alden area residents are invited to a free family friendly, chemical-free party sponsored by Operation Respect, in conjunction with the AARP/Blue Zones Vitality Project, ShineFest, Freeborn County Partners In Prevention, THRIVE Initiative, Albert Lea Park and Rec., Albert Lea Family Y, Albert Lea Police Department, Alden Scouts and United Way of Freeborn County from 1 to 3 p.m. in Alden North Park.
Those attending are asked to bring a potluck dish to share, tableware for your family, non-alcoholic beverages, lawn chairs or blankets to sit on and outdoor games. Hot dogs and salad, nametags, sidewalk chalk and bubbles for the kids, outdoor games and prizes will be provided.
The Pelican Breeze will hold a public cruise with guitarist David Courey from 1:30 to 3 p.m. No reservations are needed.
Big Ben and the Brians will perform at the Edgewater Park Bandshell at 1:30 p.m. The band plays country music, old-time waltzes and polkas, plus other pop tunes. The band includes Ben Stuart, Brian Raichle and Brian Klouse.
