With a pair of fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns, the Lake Mills football team erased a 10-point deficit to notch its first win of the season.
Slade Sifuentes scored two touchdowns on seven carries and completed 7-of-13 passes for 59 yards to lead the Bulldogs to a 28-24 victory Friday at Eagle Grove.
“We needed every player to play as hard as they could to come back,” said Lake Mills coach Bill Byrnes. “It was a great team win, a great team effort.”
Defensively, Marcus Escherich led the Bulldogs with eight tackles; Sifuentes and Zach Throne each had six. In the fourth quarter, Lake Mills held Eagle Grove scoreless.
“We were able to get two critical stops in the fourth quarter to seal the win,” Byrnes said.
In the first quarter, the Bulldogs took their first lead of the night, 7-6, on a one-yard run by Sifuentes.
Max Bergo punched the ball into the end zone on a five-yard run in the second quarter, but Lake Mills trailed 18-14 at halftime.
After Jeremy Weber scored his second and third rushing touchdowns in the third quarter to give Eagle Grove a 24-14 advantage, Lake Mills rallied in the third with Sifuentes’ second rushing touchdown and capped the comeback with a five-yard touchdown run by Alex Albert.
The Bulldogs’ defense on extra-point attempts was flawless, which proved to be the difference. Eagle Grove was 0-for-4, while Lake Mills placekicker Gabe Irons was 4-for-4.
Bergo led the Bulldogs with 72 of the Bulldogs 214 rushing yards. Escherich had 14 carries for 57 yards, and Albert added 14 carries for 53 yards.
Last year, Lake Mills beat Eagle Grove 55-0.
Next, the Bulldogs (1-4 overall) will host Pocahontas Area on Homecoming at 7 p.m. next Friday.
