Because alpaca fiber has been shown to be a superior filler for the floating booms used to clean oil from water, Alpacas of Oak Knoll Farms in Albert Lea has teamed up with their national fiber cooperative and donated several hundred pounds of alpaca fiber sheared from their alpaca herd.
This fiber is shipped to warehouses on the Gulf Coast where it is inserted into mesh tubes that are attached to make the floating booms being used in the gulf oil cleanup.
Alpaca farms from around the country are participating in this program and have donated several tons of fiber so far for this program.
