MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota’s two public college systems said each school has emergency plans in place and campus-wide alert systems to warn students, faculty and staff in the event of a shooting.

The University of Minnesota system and the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system said their campuses send alerts over text message or email to notify students of potential danger.

Spokesman Steven Henneberry said the University of Minnesota also has the ability to lock down buildings if necessary.

MnSCU spokesman Doug Anderson said emergency procedures are commonly posted in classrooms, distributed through email and included in student handbooks.

Students who spoke to The Associated Press said they don’t know what they’re supposed to do if a tragedy occurs.

Still, they said they feel safe and they’re confident they’d be kept informed.
