To domestic violence

Freeborn County law enforcement, city leaders and other residents on Thursday gathered to bring awareness to domestic violence.

Domestic violence is the leading call for service that law enforcement agencies respond to in Freeborn County, according to the leaders of the Freeborn County Crime Victims Crisis Center. It crosses into all walks of life and affects both men and women.

The community needs to band together to raise awareness of this problem and to prevent future cases of it.

Be a good example to your children of how to treat loved ones. They are watching.

 

To Albert Lea’s ranking as one of the Top 10 affordable small towns where people would actually want to live. 

The No.3 ranking came on Realtor.com after assessing more than 500 U.S. Census-designated micropolitan areas with populations between 10,000 and 50,000.

Highlights listed about Albert Lea included the low unemployment rate, available jobs, housing costs, lakes, outdoor opportunities and the benefits seen through the Blue Zones Project.

This makes us proud to live in Albert Lea, and we hope others recognize the gem we have here.

To the scholarships available to Riverland Community College students. 

There were 513 scholarships awarded to Riverland Community College students in the fiscal year 2015, totaling about $471,000. That’s a lot of money! Scholarships help ease the burden of the cost of tuition and books, not to mention financial stress. Thanks to all the people who have developed these scholarships, and congratulations to the students who received them. May you put the money to good use.

 

To Albert Lea High School student Jackson Goodell.

Albert Lea High School senior and cross country runner Jackson Goodell last week verbally committed to South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, for cross country and track and field.

Goodell, who led the Albert Lea cross country team, had been recruited by at least 20 other schools, including several universities in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.
