The Lakeview Lions Club will host its Great Eye Glass Round-up from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Northbridge Mall’s parking lot. The group will also accept old hearing aids.
Any prescription glasses, sunglasses or reading glasses are accepted. Glasses will be sent to a regional Lions facility where volunteers will clean, repair and classify the glasses by prescription. Club members, and other volunteers including medical staff, will then take the glasses to a developing country where they will be distributed free of charge.
According to a press release, some recipients may have to walk up to 50 miles to receive their eye exams and glasses. In developing countries an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wages and a single doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.
The group has the goal of collecting 1,000 pairs of eye glasses during the event.
