50 years ago — 1961

Glenville High School repeated as the Southland Conference track and field champion. Glenville scored 62 1/2 points to second place LeRoy’s 59 1/2 and third place Grand Meadow’s 52 1/2. First-place finishers for Glenville were Larry Grinolds in the 220-yard dash, Dick Offenhauser in the 880-yard run and Doug Cipra in the shot put. Glen Jensen of Glenville tied for first place in the high jump.

In the first round of the district baseball tournament, junior Ron Meyer pitched a no-hitter for Wells in their 8-0 victory over Winnebago.

Don Skelton tripled in the winning run in the 12th inning for Albert Lea High School in their 4-3 win over Rochester. John Goodmanson homered for the Tigers.

25 years ago — 1986

The Albert Lea boys’ tennis team raised their Big Nine Conference record to 5-2 with a 5-2 win over Austin.Winners for the Tigers in singles were No. 1 Mike Petersen, No. 2 Shane Johnson and No. 4 Scott Petersen. Doubles winners for the Tigers were No. 2 Wayne Prudoehl and Mark Sorenson and No. 3 Brad Buege and Ray Delgado.

In Border League softball, Emmons defeated Lyle 8-4. Winning pitcher Julie Honsey had nine strike outs, and Selena Davidson had three hits and drove in four runs.

Kiester-Walters defeated Freeborn 4-0 to remain undefeated in the Border League and handed Freeborn their first loss of the season. Winning pitcher Terry Hintz had four strike outs and threw a two-hitter.

10 years ago — 2001

Phil Schmidt from Albert Lea was undefeated in three matches as Minnesota defeated Wisconson 14 1/2 to 9 1/2 to win the Troy Burne tournament. This tournament consisted of the best professional and amateur golfers from Minnesota and Wisconson.

Erin Anderson threw her fourth no-hitter of the season for the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva softball team in their 4-2 victory over Bethlehem Academy.

In Gopher Conference baseball NRHEG defeated Faribault Academies 6-0. Tony Schlaak pitched a complete game for NRHEG and Seth Tukua and Kyle Utpadel had three hits each.
