Writers to share stories at weekend event

Local writers will share their stories of home Saturday night at The Lighthouse Theatre and Event Center in Albert Lea.
The Story Show, which begins at 7 p.m., will include presentations by Jennifer Vogt-Erickson, Katie Davis, Ann Austin, Ross Pirsig, Jeremy Corey-Gruenes, Angela Zoller-Barker, Rick Bonlender, Ashley Stewart, Mariah Maras and Kade Wiemerslage.
The event is open to the public. Tickets for teenagers and adults are $10. Children age 12 and under are free.
The presentations will be rehearsed from their own writings, and no presentation will be longer than seven minutes, organizer Riley Worth said.
“If you love to have people tell stories, then you’ll love this,” Worth said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Worth is aiming to have a second show in the spring in Albert Lea.
The presentation includes live music and artwork from Albert Lea High School students.
“I’m looking forward to being in the show and hearing everybody else’s stories,” said Vogt-Erickson in a press release. “It’s a great way to reflect on life and think about the meaning of community.”
The Story Show was founded last spring by Heather King and Worth in New London. Worth, an English teacher at Albert Lea High School, said he hopes it can catch on in Freeborn County.
“Albert Lea boasts a talented community of writers, most of whom don’t refer to themselves as writers because they do other things for income,” Worth said in a press release. “But those other things haven’t quashed their love of the English language.”
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to SEMCAC in Albert Lea.
“There’s something powerful about hearing a well-written story read out loud by its writer,” King said. “Everyone has a story to tell, and giving those stories a stage is as empowering for me as it is for the readers and listeners.”
Tickets are available at the Coffee House on Main in Austin, Marshall Street Music, Hy-Vee, Stadheim Jewelers and the Albert Lea Convention & Visitors Bureau in Albert Lea.
