A rough start to the season continued with a shutout for the Tigers.
The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team fell 5-0 against Austin Thursday at Albert Lea City Arena.
The Packers (2-0, 2-0 Big Nine) outshot the Tigers (0-4, 0-3 Big Nine) each period to keep seventh-grade goalie Maddie Schneider working all night. Schneider led Albert Lea with 39 saves. Austin had a 44-20 shots-on-goal advantage.
Albert Lea accrued seven penalties to Austin’s four, most of which were either roughing or tripping.
The Tigers are led by senior duo Hannah Savelkoul and Haley Larson. Six of the 15 players on Albert Lea’s roster are seventh- or eighth-graders.
Next, the Tigers will play at 1 p.m. Saturday at Winona (0-3, 0-3 Big Nine). Winona is coming off an 8-2 loss Thursday at Northfield and has been outscored 15-2 on the season.
